Covid-19 pandemic worsens labor market conditions

(Prensa Latina) Health and economic crisis caused by Covid-19 is currently endangering the eradication of forced and child labor, discrimination against employment and occupation, the International Labor Organization (ILO) reported.

ILO reported that eliminating these labor issues are the basis for reconfiguring a better and fairer world of work, after the Covid-19 pandemic.

According to ILO, hundreds of millions of workers worldwide -who make their living in the informal economy, with no protection or social representation, whose incomes drop or even melt away as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic- are most hit due to vulnerability situations. Health crisis not only jeopardizes public health, the economic and social upheaval endangers the livelihoods and long-term well-being of millions of people, with their fundamental rights threatened and mired in greater insecurity.

Thus, safeguarding and widening principles and freedoms at work will be decisive for successful responses to global jobless crisis, both immediate and long-term, ILO warned.

Plus, ILO warned that people facing up a socioeconomic vulnerability situation and with no alternative survival options to cope with the situation are at greater risk of being victims of forced labor and debt bondage, scourges that have soared due to the Covid-19 crisis.
