(Prensa Latina) The president of the Chilean Senate, Yasna Provoste, of the Christian Democracy party, joined the presidential elections race slated for November 21.
Provoste won the primary elections held on Saturday by the centrist parties that make up the Constituent Unity bloc. She captured 62.2 percent of the votes, according to partial results.
She widely surpassed Paula Narváez, proposed by the Socialist Party, the Party for Democracy and other minor forces, who obtained 26.4 percent of the votes, and Carlos Maldonado, of the Radical Party, with 11 percent.
The parties contending for the candidacy were satisfied with the participation of about 160,000 voters, which represents the total effective membership of these organizations, although the total number of voters was not known.
Provoste is so far the only woman candidate running for the November presidential elections, in which Gabriel Boric, for the left-wing bloc Apruebo Dignidad and Sebastián Sichel for the right-wing coalition Chile Vamos have already been confirmed as winners in their respective primaries.
