The Ecuadorian Foreign Ministry learned of the decision adopted by the Mexican Government to temporarily reestablish, until March 4, 2022, the visa requirement for Ecuadorian citizens who wish to enter the territory of that country.
Mexico made this decision due to the high number of nationals who are victims of mafias that use this mechanism with the intention of illegally transferring them to the United States.
“The Ecuadorian Government registers the decision, which the Government of Mexico adopted in a sovereign manner, a measure that by itself will not solve the human drama generated by risky migration, from which our compatriots suffer,” says the statement issued by the Foreign Ministry.
He explained that they will look for mechanisms, both to reduce the impact that the tourist, commercial and cultural exchange between the two countries could suffer, and to seek the reestablishment of the visa exemption in the short term.
In addition, he announced that Ecuador will analyze joint and coordinated actions in the fight against migrant smuggling networks, and the strengthening of assistance and protection measures for Ecuadorian migrants in vulnerable situations.
