During the government of former President Lenín Moreno, the Ministry of Health “has received limited resources for the budget for medicines,” according to the ministerial agreement that declares a focused emergency for the public network hospital system in Ecuador.
It details that in that year 352.66 million were allocated, while in 2021 only 117 million were received, which means 77% less. As for the codified budget, compared to 2018, what was received in 2021 corresponds to 30% less, according to the information in the document.
Regarding medical devices, there was also a reduction in its budget since 2018, a year that was allocated 241 million, while in 2021 it received 209 million, which represents a decrease of 14%.
When the focused emergency was announced, the current Minister of Health, Ximena Garzón, explained that it will last for 60 days; While from next August 24, the phase of progressive supply to 135 first, second and third level hospitals in nine areas of the country will begin.
The complaints of lack of medicines has been constant throughout this year and a half of pandemic. Now, patients await the restitution of these resources for a correct supply.
