(Prensa Latina) The Uruguayan Government on Thursday resorted to a proposal by a Port Regulatory Unit, rather than clear questions in the parliamentary questioning for a monopoly agreement with a multinational company.
An announcement to this effect was made by former Transport Minister Luis Alberto Heber, who played a key role in the negotiation with Belgian logistics firm Katoen Natie, to which the exclusive exploitation for 60 years of the container terminal in Montevideo was granted.
His questioner, Broad Front (FA) Senator Charles Carrera, said that this is ‘an unworthy and immoral, unconstitutional and inconvenient agreement.’ The current minister of the Interior defended the agreement in exchange for granting a monopoly and receiving investments.
But in the face of the questioned explanations, he announced the purpose of creating a regulatory unit of tariff technical advice by law to follow-up the port activity.
