This Wednesday, August 18, 2021, the director of the National Service for Comprehensive Attention to Persons Deprived of Liberty (SNAI), Fausto Cobo, announced the implementation of a restructuring plan for the prison system, given the crisis in this sector.
The State and Public Safety Council (COSEPE) approved the projects related to the prison situation and it will be $ 75 million that the Government will allocate for four years.
It will serve to “adapt and build more pavilions and allocate something to adapt a maximum security prison and a smaller one with maximum security,” he explained.
In addition, he announced that $ 40 million was available to place radars in Manabí, which directly influences the security of the prison system.
They also approved proposals for the rehabilitation of the prison system, which will be in charge of the Secretariat for Human Rights. This was said by Bernarda Ordoñez, head of this entity, who did not provide details.
Cobo pointed out that the prison crisis has been going on for several years due to the actions and omissions of previous governments. He was also not specific about the actions to be implemented in the plan, but announced that there are measures for the short, medium and long term.
In up to six months, technology will be improved in certain centers, as well as infrastructure repair. In the medium term (two years) the objective is to alleviate the overcrowding that exceeds 40% and to continue with the implementation of technology in other prisons and, in four years, to continue with control.
This plan also plans to cover the deficit of prison guides and training will be another axis.
