EU condemns escalation of violence in Afghanistan

(Prensa Latina) The European Union (EU) on Thursday condemned what it described as a ‘significant escalation of violence’ in Afghanistan, while advocating a ceasefire in that Asian country.

EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell and European Commissioner for Crisis Management Janez Lenarcic signed a communique issued after Tuesday’s attack on the house of Afghan Defense Minister Bismillah Mohammadi, in which at least eight people were killed and more than 20 were injured.

Since then, days of intense fighting have taken place between Afghan security forces and the Taliban, especially in Herat and Helmand provinces.

Unnecessary violence causes immense suffering in citizens and increases the number of people displaced within the country in search of security and refuge, the text states.

Despite the commitment made by the parties in conflict after the signing of the peace agreement in Doha, Qatar, violence continues in Afghanistan.
