(Prensa Latina) The representative of the World Health Organization (WHO) in Egypt, Gaeema al-Gasseer, lamented the lack of availability of Covid-19 vaccines for less developed countries.
The initial plan was to distribute two billion doses among those countries through the Covax mechanism, a global initiative promoted for this purpose, but it has been impossible to reach that figure because demand is higher than production, al-Gasseer stressed in an interview with the Al-Ahram newspaper.
Al-Gasseer explained that the goal was to immunize 10 percent of the world’s population in September 2021, 40 percent in December and 70 percent by next year, which was not achieved.
As an example, she cited the case of Africa, where less than 1 percent of its inhabitants have been vaccinated to date.
In the case of Egypt, she highlighted the country’s progress in fighting the pandemic, which was recognized by the WHO.
All sectors have worked together to face the threat, the official highlighted.
Health Minister Hala Zayed revealed last week that Egypt will obtain more than 148 million doses of vaccines against Covid-19 in the last five months of the year, enough to immunize 83.7 million people.
