(Prensa Latina) More than half a million people in Uruguay have registered so far to get a third dose of Covid-19 vaccines, while health authorities monitor the presence of the Delta variant of SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus.
Due to the latest health news, the Ministry of Public Health last week instructed to prioritize the preventive reinforcement for moderate and severe immune-suppressed patients.
However, two days ago, they opened that possibility for the remaining population with two doses of the Sinovac vaccine to get a third from Pfizer, since according to Health Minister Daniel Salinas, that combination is safe.
According to official data, 63.45 percent of the population have received both doses, and 72.7 have been adminsitered at least one.
Salinas pointed out the detection of 112 positive cases of Covid-19 with the Delta strain of the virus, travelers from abroad, mainly from Spain, Brazil, Mexico and the United States. So far no deaths have been reported, and most patients are asymptomatic.
The official emphasized that although the number of contagions in the country decreased, the epidemic is still not controlled, and reiterated a previous warning of the high contagiousness of viral variants identified so far.
However, official sources noted that Uruguayan President Luis Lacalle Pou will announce the reopening of borders next week.
