Patients with cancer and other catastrophic diseases demanded that President Guillermo Lasso declare an emergency in the health system due to the shortage of medicines in Ecuador’s hospitals.
“We request in a special way, the president, to declare a national emergency in the health system,” said Gustavo Dávila, national coordinator of the Alliance.
The representatives of these organizations denounced that, due to the lack of medicines, people with aggravating diseases cannot continue with their treatments, for which they demanded the provision of quality drugs in health homes.
Given the need for medicines, the organizations inaugurated their own temporary free oncological medicine kit, to meet the demand of patients who have not received their medicines in public hospitals.
Regarding this problem, Vice President Alfredo Borrero reported that this Monday, August 2, President Guillermo Lasso will announce measures to cover 50% of the lack of medicines that is registered in hospitals.
He also indicated that information is being collected regarding the exact number of medicines in shortage, so, he stressed, a prior examination by the Comptroller’s Office is needed.
