The delta variant of the coronavirus could be circulating in Quito. The Secretary of Health of the Capital Municipality, Ximena Abarca, reported that the San Francisco University research center is analyzing samples of infected people to rule out or confirm the presence of this variant.
“We are taking samples and sending them to the University of San Francisco to determine if there is the new variant,” said the official. In addition, she expressed her concern about the increase in positive cases of Covid-19 in the Metropolitan District.
“We are concerned that ICU bed occupancy levels remain high,” she warned.
For his part, the Vice Minister of Health Surveillance and Governance, José Ruales, clarified that the circulation of this variation has not been identified in the country, which has 60% more transmissibility than the original virus.
According to Ruales, there are no reports from laboratories or from the National Institute for Public Health Research (INSPI) or from universities that make up the variant diagnosis network.
